Pubs with Real Ale

I enjoy a pint of beer so I thought I would write about the pubs that I enjoy visiting (mostly in Birmingham) and the beers they sell. Like a lot of pages on this site, it will grow as I find new, interesting establishments.

I am a real ale man myself and enjoy an amber, malty bitter.
I also enjoy Belgium beer

Pubs in the Birmingham Town Centre

The Wellington:
Found on Bennetts Hill, one of the roads that run from New Street up towards the Cathedral.
A large pub with two bars.

There is a good choice of beers with a row of 17 pumps selling beers in order of colour. There is also a screen showing the beers. The pub has an old-fashioned feel about it. They lso sell over 100 whiskies.
Upstairs is another bar with a verandah and selling a range, amongst other things, of Japanese whiskies.

The Old Joint Stock
Another nice pub in the middle of town is The Old Joint Stock. This is behind The Wellington and faces the Cathedral. …In fact by going out through the back door of The Old Joint Stock you are facing the back door of The Wellington – very convenient! However, unlike The Wellington, The Old Joint Stock can get very crowded on a Friday evening.

The Old Contemptibles
A pub with an interesting interior that the First World War heroes of the same name. It also has a good selection of cask beers. It is a little off the beaten track and can be found on the corner of Edmund Street, a short distance beyond the Cathedral when walking from New Street.

Post Office Vaults
84 New Street
This is a really interesting pub that can be reached from New Street, but also has an entrance on Pinfold Street.
It has a very good range of craft beers as well over 200 foreign beers.

You need to go down some steps as if you are entering a cellar and it isnt very big but it is still well worth a visit.

Bacchus
Burlington Arcade, New St,

I must have walked past the entrance to the Bacchus pub many times without knowing it.
Its entrance lies off the Burlington Arcade, near the back of New Street Station, and is reached by going down a staircase.

It is a very interesting pub, elaborately decorated as a Roman Temple and has a high vaulted ceiling.
