A visit to The Bacchus Bar
Yesterday, while shopping in the Birmingham Town Centre, I decided a beer would be good before going home. I decided to try a bar my neighbour had recommended to me, The Bacchus Bar.
I found it off the Burlington Arcade, which links Stevenson street (behind New Street Station) to New Street. It is down a flight of steps elaborately decorated with nymphs and Roman gods.
Inside it was amazing. A series of linked underground caverns, decorated as a cross between a crypt and a Roman temple with large paintings of Roman deity’s adorning the walls (including, of course, Bacchus).
I was only going to stay for one pint but the beer was so delicious (they had Theakston’s Old Peculiar from the cask) that I needed a second pint!
I didn’t eat at The Bacchus but the food looked very good and I will definitely return.

On a separate note all together, on my way home on the bus I was playing ‘Spelling Bee’ on my phone (I know, sad isn’t it) and I was trying to make words containing M.
I tried dumming/dumbing and when neither was accepted I looked it up.
I had actually thought it was spelt ‘dumming’ but of course it was ‘dumbing’ and is surprisingly still in use.
According to Wikipedia, the term “dumbing down” was movie-business slang, used by screenplay writers, meaning: “to revise a script so it would appeal to those of little education or intelligence”
Now I know it’s etymology I don’t think I will be using it any more.
