I enjoy a pint of beer so I thought I would write about Birmingham pubs I enjoy visiting and the beers they sell. Like many pages on this site, it will grow as I find new, interesting establishments.

My preference is cask beer preferably an amber, malty bitter. I also enjoy Belgian beer.
It’s also nice to visit pubs of historical interest … especially if they sell good beer.

If anybody can recommend a Birmingham pub that sells decent cask beer that isn’t mentioned here please leave a comment and let me know.

I have visited all of the pubs mentioned on this page but one or two pubs have more photos so I have included them in a separate post:

Pubs in (or near)  Birmingham Town Centre

The Wellington:
Found on Bennetts Hill, one of the roads that run from New Street up towards the Cathedral.
A large pub with two bars.

There is a good choice of beers with a row of 17 pumps selling beers in order of colour. There is also a screen showing the beers. The pub has an old-fashioned feel about it. They also sell over 100 whiskies.
Upstairs is another bar with a verandah and selling a range, amongst other things, of Japanese whiskies.

The Old Joint Stock
Another nice pub in the middle of town is The Old Joint Stock. This is behind The Wellington and faces the Cathedral. …In fact by going out through the back door of The Old Joint Stock you are facing the back door of The Wellington – very convenient! However, unlike The Wellington, The Old Joint Stock can get very crowded on a Friday evening.

The Old Contemptibles
A pub with an interesting interior that the First World War heroes of the same name. It also has a good selection of cask beers. It is a little off the beaten track and can be found on the corner of Edmund Street, a short distance beyond the Cathedral when walking from New Street.

From the Heritage and History website:
The Old Contemptibles, Birmingham

Post Office Vaults
84 New Street
This is a really interesting pub that can be reached from New Street, but also has an entrance on Pinfold Street.
It has a very good range of craft beers as well over 200 foreign beers.

You need to go down some steps as if you are entering a cellar and it isnt very big but it is still well worth a visit.

Entrance to Post Office vaults on Pinford Street

Bacchus
Burlington Arcade, New St,

I must have walked past the entrance to the Bacchus pub many times without knowing it.
Its entrance lies off the Burlington Arcade, near the back of New Street Station, and is reached by going down a staircase.

It is a very interesting pub, elaborately decorated as a Roman Temple and has a high vaulted ceiling.

A visit to the Bacchus Bar

Pubs in Kings Heath and Balsall Heath

The Old Moseley Arms
53 Tindal St, Balsall Heath, Birmingham B12 9QU

This pub is hidden away up a side street and you need to go out of your way to find it. It is a traditional, cosy, pre-war pub (built-in 1927).
It has decent cask beer  and sells Indian food with a full tandoori menu.   What more could you want?

It has a friendly atmosphere with a local clientele.

A lovely pub, well worth the time taken to find it.

The Hop & Scotch
9 Institute Rd, Kings Heath, B14 7EG
A small micro-pub with 5 cask beers found near the top of Kings heath up a side road (institution Road)

It was voted Secret Birmingham’s ‘Pub of the Year’ for the second year in a row  (2024).
The beer varieties are changed regularly so you will often find something new, although always good,

The Houblon
7 Institute Rd, Kings Heath, B14 7EG
The Houblon is just two doors down from the Hop&Scotch  so you haven’t got far to go for an evening out.
The Hoblon specializes in foreign beer and has a menu of about 30 varieties kept under temperature control.
It also has some European beers on tap.
