Guedelon Castle
Guedelon Castle is a project to build a medieval castle using traditional techniques and locally sourced materials – an exercise in ‘experimental archaeology’.
Everything needed for the construction, masonry, tiles, rope etc are all made on-site by the chateau’s 50 craftsmen using the original techniques
Even the iron tools are made from iron ore dug up and smelted in the chateau’s foundry.
the cran used to raise heavy items is driven by a giant treadle wheel.
I visited Guedelon in the Summer of this year (2024) but have been several times before.
It is really interesting to see the progress…..
The project was started in 1997 and is still ongoing.
It has a fantastic atmosphere with the bustling sounds of stonemasons, woodcutters and blacksmiths all at work
