A Trip to Snowdonia
I decided that before the weather got too cold, I would walk up Snowdon. I booked a night at Pen-Y-Pas Youth Hostel and set off the next day.
The drive was about two and a half hours so I enjoyed fish and chips at Colwyn Bay.
I didn’t need to be at Pen-Y-Pas until that evening so, being a fan of “The Prisoner” (starring Patrick McGoohan) I decided to visit Portmeirion, where the TV series was filmed.
Despite there being some lovely coastal walks in the area (and the fact it cost £18.00 entry) after a couple of hours I drove on towards Snowdon.
The car park at Pen-Y-Pas costs £20 for 8 hours (and is pre-book only) so I parked a few miles down the road at Nant Peris (£6 a day) and caught the Sherpa bus to the hostel.. I find that road a little scary for myself anyway.
The video below shows the bus journey from Nant Peris to Pen-y Pass car park
Pen-y-Pass was comfortable with nice views although if anyone expected it to be like a hotel they would be disappointed, however as hostels go it was very good with simple but tasty food. .. but for £40 a night it was good value. The breakfast (additional £9.00) was great.
There are six recognised routes up Snowden: Watkins, Rangers, Llanberis, Crib Goch, Pyg and Miners, the last three of which start near Pen-y-Pass.
I set out at about 8.45 to follow the Miners’ track, a path used to carry tin from the old tin mines which are accessible from the track
This should take between 3-4 hours but it took me 7! I wanted to take the train back but it was fully booked. I went back down the Llanberis track as it was a little less steep (although considerably longer).
The weather was far too hot for walking but as there was no train I had little option.
It was about 5.00pm when I reached Llanberis.
After catching the Sherpa bus back to the car I decided to drive home.
I did try a couple of hotels in Betws-y-Coed, but they were fully booked. I was getting a bit fed up with Wales by this time so decided to drive home, getting back at about 8.30pm.
As I had to pass my local pub (The Selly Park Tavern) I decided to stop off for supper and a much-needed beer .. and then walked home.
